Snack Rut

We are in a snack rut!!  The kids like toast with peanut butter, graham crackers, Annie's cheddar bunnies,  pretzels, hummus and crackers.  But I just feel like it's not really doing it job of getting them from lunch to dinner.  We have lunch at noon and often dinner isn't until 6:30.  That's  a long time for ME to go, let alone growing/active kids!  I've been trying to have more fruit around and that's been helpful.  But I'd still like some other ideas.

So.  What's your favorite, go-to, fill 'em-up snack??

  1. Our rule is to eat every three hours, and I ask the kids to keep track of what time they eat so they don't ever get to that low point...and we all know what that feels like! My kids are also well-schooled in how to measure a portion so they don't overeat, and so the groceries last longer. Here are some things we eat all the time as snacks:

We do a lot of smoothies around here, I keep several containers of cut up fruit and veggies at all times, cheese cubes and crackers, homemade protein/granola bars or healthy store-bought ones, Progresso light soups, almonds or walnuts, Mountain High yogurt, oatmeal, whole-wheat toaster waffles with PB, bowl of healthy cereal like Kashi or Puffins, bowl of baby spinach with a little poppy seed dressing, apples with PB or almond butter, bulk trail mix, turkey & tortilla roll-ups, string cheese and lettuce roll-ups...

I'm sure there are some I'm forgetting, but those are a start. :)

  3. Could you share your granola bars recipe? I have one that I use every once in a while, but I'm still not 100% pleased with it. I hadn't thought about the waffles, but that's a great idea! I made a quadruple batch of waffles every 3 months of so. And I love trail mix WAY too much to keep it around!! Definitely a weakness of mine! Thanks for the ideas!!

  4. I'm a little behind here, but I'd say cheese cubes, cottage cheese, nuts, grapes. The first 3 are all high protein, so they'll feel full longer. :)
